Identifying the easy constellations is the best way to get started with astronomy. Even if you’ve been using a telescope for many years, it helps to know the easy to spot constellations to help with navigating the night sky.

I’m going to show you the key constellations to navigate the heavens with binoculars or a telescope and then we’ll show you how to use these to discover some of the less obvious groupings.

Let’s begin though with some tips to help you find any constellation.

Tips for Finding and Recognizing Constellations

There are some simple steps you can take to make it easier to locate specific constellations.

Familiarize Yourself With Constellation Shapes

It’s hard to find something if you don’t know what to look for. While many star constellations discussed below have nicknames that usually describe what they look like, you should still refer to images or drawings of the constellations.

Always start with the largest, brightest and most obvious ones. Orion is too bright and striking to miss but is only available in the winter evening sky. So learn to find the ‘W’ of Cassiopeia and the seven bright stars of the Big Dipper (Plough) because these are circumpolar constellations for most of us and are visible every night of the year.

Other big, bright and obvious constellations include Cygnus and Pegasus. We’re going to look at all of these in more detail below.

Understand Cardinal Directions

Once you understand the important stars and constellations, you can use them to determine north, south, east, and west. However, knowing the cardinal directions beforehand can be helpful when learning the constellations.

When used in conjunction with astronomy software, like the free Stellarium or paid SkySafari, the compass directions on your phone make sure you’re facing the right way to look for any constellation on your star chart.

Use Star Charts

Studying star charts or planispheres makes it easier to locate constellations. Star charts aren’t 100% necessary but can be supremely helpful, especially for children stargazing.

They’ll also help you decode the sky by showing you the boundaries between constellations and which ones that you don’t yet know border the ones that you do. In this way, you’ll steadily build up a fabulous working map of the heavens.

Stargaze Under a Dark, Clear Sky

Make sure the sky is properly dark before you begin your constellation hunt. It can take a long time for twilight to end and many constellations are based around fainter stars (because our ancient relatives didn’t have light pollution to contend with) and dark skies are the best for seeing them.

When we’re new to learning the constellations, it also helps to have a clear sky. While astronomy can be carried out under scudding cloud cover, especially when there are large breaks in the cloud, it is much better to do it when the sky is cloudless.

Be Patient and Calm

Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t recognize any of the constellations right away. Like most hobbies, stargazing and astronomy are skills that can be improved. No matter how old you are or what fancy equipment you have, there may still be a learning curve, and that’s okay!

How to Recognize Specific Constellations

This section will tell you how to recognize constellations in the night sky using various factors like stars, nearby constellations, and distinct shapes.

Ursa Major

Ursa Major, also called the Big Dipper or Great Bear (or the Plough, in the UK), is the most recognizable of all the constellations.

Technically, the Big Dipper is an asterism, which is a recognizable grouping of stars that isn’t a constellation. It consists of seven stars: Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Dubhe, Merak, and Phecda arranged like a saucepan with a handle.

Because it’s so big and bright and is circumpolar, you can easily find Ursa Major with the naked eye in most places on clear nights.

Ursa Minor

Ursa Minor, also known as the Little Dipper, is one of the most well-known and easy-to-find constellations. It’s famous for looking like a small version of the Big Dipper, and you can see in the image below how it mirrors Ursa Major.

Ursa Minor has seven stars, the most famous of which is the northern Pole Star, Polaris. Also in the mix are Yildan, Epsilon Ursae Minoris, Eta Ursae Minoris, Zeta Ursae Minoris, Pherkad, and Kochab. 

Camelopardalis, Cepheus, and Draco constellations border Ursa Minor, so finding this constellation can help you find others.

To identify Ursa Minor, scan the night sky above the north horizon for the Little Dipper shape. The farther north you are in the world, the higher in the night sky it will be, meaning that it could be directly above you.

Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia is a large constellation named after a goddess. Segin, Ruchbah, Navi, Shedar, and Caph are the five stars that make up this constellation. The constellation takes the shape of a low, wide W, or an M, depending on where you are in the world.

Like Ursas Major and Minor, Cassiopeia is also circumpolar, meaning we can see it overhead every night of the year in most of the northern hemisphere.

Scan the night sky with your naked eye for the bright stars that make up the W or M. It will be near the Cepheus, Camelopardalis, Perseus, Andromeda, and Lacerta constellations and will be higher in the sky the farther north you are.

Orion

The Orion constellation is near the Eridanus, Gemini, Lepus, Monoceros, and Taurus constellations. It is one of the most recognizable constellations because of the super bright stars that make up Orion’s Belt; it looks like a person in a toga preparing to launch an arrow through a bow.

When looking for smaller, fainter constellations, many people use Orion as their start because it is easy to find.

To identify it, face south on a winter’s evening and look for the four bright stars that make a winky rhombus: Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Rigel, and Saiph. Below these, you’ll see a row of three very bright stars, Mintaka, Alnilam, and Alnitak, which make up Orion’s Belt.

Pegasus

The constellation of Pegasus is best known for the huge square marked by the four bright stars Scheat, Alpheratz, Markab, and Algenib. Rather unimaginatively, this is known as the Great Square of Pegasus, and it’s a fab place to work out how dark your sky is.

To find it, scan the night sky for four stars of equal brightness and form an almost square. Now you know how to find Ursa Minor and Cassiopeia, you can use them to locate Pegasus. Just follow the line from Polaris to Caph which points that way to the Great Square.

Pegasus is high in the south in the evening in fall. It’s surrounded by several smaller constellations, including Lacerta, Cygnus (see below), Vulpecula, Delphinus, Equuleus, Aquarius, Pisces, and Andromeda constellations.

Cygnus

Flying overhead in summer and fall evenings, and next door to Pegasus is the graceful and easily discovered form of Cygnus the Swan.

Formed by the stars Deneb, Al Fawaris, Albireo, Gienach, and Sadr, Cygnus takes the shape of a giant cross. It’s part of the Hercules family of constellations and is bordered by Cepheus, Draco, Lacerta, Lyra, Pegasus, and Vulpecula.

If you can’t immediately recognize it, it can help to use Cassiopeia to point the way. Follow the line from Ruchbah and Navi to the next very bright star, Deneb, which is at the tale of the swan.

Other Constellations You Can Find

The six constellations discussed above are the cornerstones of astronomy and can help you locate several other large constellations. Using the constellations above, you can identify the constellations discussed in this section.

Taurus

One of the best ways to find the Taurus constellation is to identify Orion’s Belt and then draw an imaginary line from Alnitak to Mintaka. Extend this line to Aldebaran, the brightest star in the Taurus constellation.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius contains an asterism known as ‘the Teapot’ for its very obvious shape. This is quite a southerly constellation so it doesn’t get high in the night sky, especially in more northern latitudes like the UK.

In the central belt of the contiguous US states, expect to see it 20° or so over the southern horizon at its evening highest in late summer.

It contains nine bright stars and points toward the Milky Way. To find it, use the two stars Alpheratz and Markab at opposite corners of the Great Square of Pegasus to point the way.

Cepheus

Cepheus is a large constellation shaped like a child’s stick house drawing. At its northern end, this constellation wraps around Polaris, making it circumpolar and visible every night of the year, all night long.

It’s part of the Perseus constellation family, so many people use Cassiopeia constellation to find it. To do this, draw an imaginary line from Shedar to Caph and follow it to Alderamin, the brightest star in Cepheus.

Leo

Leo is one of the larger constellations and is bordered by Virgo, Ursa Major, Coma Berenices, Crater, Hydra, Leo Minor, Lynx, and Sextans. It’s highest in the evening sky in late spring / early summer.

Although this constellation is meant to depict a lion, it’s better known for its sickle or hook asterism that looks a little like a backward-facing question mark. To find it, trace the imaginary line from Ursa Major’s Megrez and Phecda stars. These point the way to two of Leo’s brightest stars, Algieba and Regulus.

Hercules

Hercules is large but, even though it’s high overhead on a summer’s evening, it can be difficult to find because it’s one of the dimmer constellations.

Being able to identify it is useful though because many other constellations, including Aquila, Boötes, Corona Borealis, Draco, Lyra, Ophiuchus, Sagitta, Serpens, and Vulpecula, surround it. 

You can typically find it by using Cygnus. Imagine Deneb, the brightest star in the Swan constellation, is at 12 o’clock on a watch dial centered on the star Sadr. The central ‘Keystone’ of Hercules is at 4 o’clock. What helps is that the very bright star Vega, in Lyra, also points the way.

Boötes

The final secondary constellation that you should learn to identify is Boötes. Part of the Ursa Major family, it’s easy to find from the Big Dipper and best viewed on spring and summer evenings.

Arcturus is the brightest star in Boötes and one of the brightest in the entire night sky; it’s famed for its red color. Astronomers use the saying ‘arc to Arcturus’ from the Big Dipper’s handle, but you can also use Dubhe to Megrez and Merak to Phecda to point the way to this kite-shaped constellation.

Identifying Constellations During Different Seasons

Unfortunately, you can’t see all these constellations year-round in the evening. The best seasons to find them, assuming you’ll be hunting in the evening, are:

Winter

Winter is one of the best seasons for stargazing because the air is clear and dry, meaning fewer clouds and obstructions. During winter, you can find:

  • Ursa Major
  • Ursa Minor
  • Cepheus
  • Cassiopeia
  • Orion
  • Taurus

Spring

When spring comes, the winter constellations begin to fade to make way for the spring constellations! You can find the following constellations in spring:

  • Ursa Major
  • Ursa Minor
  • Cepheus
  • Hercules
  • Leo
  • Bootes

Summer

Summer can be more of a challenge for finding constellations because of shorter nights and brighter skies. Nevertheless, it offers a look at some of the most beautiful constellations, such as:

  • Ursa Major
  • Ursa Minor
  • Cepheus
  • Hercules
  • Cygnus
  • Sagittarius

Fall / Autumn

Lastly, fall also reveals some sensational constellations. During autumn, you can find the following constellations:

  • Ursa Major
  • Ursa Minor
  • Cepheus
  • Cassiopeia
  • Pegasus

Summary

Knowing how to recognize constellations in the night sky makes stargazing infinitely more satisfying.
